Hard drives have seen significant advancements in recent years. Solid-state drives (SSDs) have gained popularity due to their faster access times, durability, and reduced power consumption. The transition from SATA to NVMe interfaces has further improved SSD performance. HDDs continue to offer larger storage capacities at lower costs, making them suitable for mass storage needs. Hybrid drives (SSHDs) combining SSD cache with HDDs provide a balance between speed and capacity. Ongoing research explores technologies like shingled magnetic recording (SMR) for HDDs and new types of non-volatile memory for SSDs, promising even higher storage densities and faster speeds in the future.
